Funny enough, I’ve never had to choke my ruckus or my DRZ to start. Even in the dead of winter

1. You have to not care if it backfires a little. Or a lot.

Step 2. You have to pump it quite a bit to get plenty of fuel in there

C. You have to make sure to keep the revs up until it gets some heat built up.

I’ll just get one with a choke when the time comes.

Yeah, that’s why I went to a carb with an electric choke. It makes life much easier and there are fewer loud bangs.

I run no choke on my Holley and have no issues starting cold. Just pump it once or twice and go. If you have it properly tuned and set up, it’s not an issue.

BMC Special Tuning used to sell an eight-port, cross-flow head for the Mini Cooper S which was fitted with four Amal carbs – and no choke.

A journalist who tested a car so equipped managed to convince his lady companion to p a r t i a l l y cover the intakes with her dainty hands.

Pump the gas, crank it, give it a few revs to get things going, and go on as usual. It’s not the end of the world, just have to know what you’re doing.

And if the engine were in a van with an engine cover over it...

I just had never heard of such a thing nor given it any thought.

Problem is, if the blasted thing backfires you may get a burn.

But if you really have to start the engine on a cold frosty morning and it’s being uncooperative - well, partially obstructing the venturis would be one way of doing it.

When I'm ready for the four-barrel, I'll buy one with a choke. This caught my eye and I wanted to see what my clever Oppo friends thought about it.
